Crunchy fishy treats

There is ont treat that I love because it’s easy to make and super healthy and my crew agrees, it’s teeny tiny fishes. Whatever you can find, sardines, anchovies, herrings, smelts or whitebaits. Cheap and natural, what more can you ask for? It used to be super easy to find them in France, a little less in Manhattan, but you just have to be at the right place at the right time ;).

Homemade treats for below 9 dollars!

Fresh whitebait cleaned a little and put on the trays. A weird one lost in the batch :).

Another 10 minutes in the oven and it’s done!

After 7 hours of dehydratation.

Ready to be devoured!

I usually buy about a pound for around 7 to 9 dollars! I rinse them, clean them a little bit, you know, remove the guts because I find it gross and put them on the dehydrator’s trays. Easy! I haven’t yet tried any marinade because I like to get them whole, fresh from the fish market. I would probably use a marinade if I got white fish fillets like sole or cod.

I will then dehydrate them for 7-8 hours depending on their size and once they look good, I put them in the oven at 260°F/126°C for ten mintues to make sure all bacteria is killed. And it’s done! A little smelly in the kitchen, but worth the inconvenience. I then store them in the fridge.

Ready…

Steady…

Go! Yummy!

My crew is mad about those! And they’re easily breakable for the toothless seniors, so it’s truly a win-win!

Of course, they are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, that supports a healthy skin & coat, the brain and vision, their immune system and joint health. I can really see the difference in their energy and joint strength since we’ve been making such treats for them (together with our homemade food). And by making them ourselves, we know exactly that no crap has been added for preservation or who knows what else to cover poor quality, it’s a 100% natural! You are what you eat right?!
